International Day of Yoga: A Love Letter to the Practice That Changed My Life
If you had told me years ago that yoga would become the golden thread weaving together every chapter of my life, I would have smiled politely and thought, “That’s sweet, but I’m not so sure.” And yet, here I am—approaching this International Day of Yoga—overflowing with gratitude, love, and awe for a practice that has become my truest companion, my teacher, and my gift to share.
My First Steps on the Mat
I still remember my very first yoga class—nervous, unsure, and honestly, a little skeptical. I was an active 19 year old looking for physical challenge and movement, it was slow and I REALLY didn’t enjoy it. It easily could have turned me away forever.
It was 5 years before I made it back to my mat after a heart wrenching, life shattering break-up. A friend knew I had been struggling emotionally and suggested a class. Because of my previous experience I wanted to say no but something pulled me to agree. This class offered physical challenge and what I found was something much deeper. There was a moment, lying in savasana, when I felt a quiet peace I hadn’t realized I’d been searching for. That gentle sense of “coming home” to myself was the spark that lit a fire in my heart.
Over the next 15 years, yoga became my anchor through every storm and my celebration in every sunrise. It’s been with me through heartbreaks and triumphs, loneliness and connection, anxiety and peace. There are mornings when I wake up before the sun, roll out my mat, and feel the presence of every teacher and yogi who has come before me—guiding me, holding me, reminding me that I am never alone, I am whole and ALWAYS loved.
Yoga as a Pathway to Joy, Healing, and Growth
Yoga has taught me how to listen—to my body, my breath, my intuition. It’s helped me discover a wellspring of joy and love within myself, especially during seasons when I felt most alone. Through the simple act of moving and breathing with awareness, I’ve learned to cultivate happiness from the inside out. Yoga has given me the courage to be present with my pain, to celebrate my growth, and to embrace every part of myself—even the messy, imperfect bits.
What started as a physical practice quickly became a journey into the heart of who I am. The deeper I went, the more I realized that yoga isn’t just about postures or flexibility—it’s about connection. Connection to self, to others, to the world around us and to something greater than us all.
The Privilege of Sharing Yoga With Others
If there’s one thing that fills my heart to bursting, it’s the privilege of sharing yoga with others. I’ve had the honor of witnessing transformation in so many beautiful souls—students and teachers alike. I’ve seen the shyest person find their voice, the most anxious heart discover peace, and those who doubted their strength blossom into confident, empowered beings.
One of my favorite memories is of a student who came to me after a particularly challenging year. She arrived on her mat with tears in her eyes, unsure if she belonged. Over time, I watched her find not only physical strength, but also a deep sense of self-worth. She told me, “Yoga gave me my life back.” Stories like hers remind me every day why I do what I do and why I love it so much.
And then there are the teachers I’ve trained—each one bringing their own unique light into the world. Seeing them step into their power, share their gifts, and create communities of healing is the greatest reward I could ever ask for. I am endlessly inspired by their courage, compassion, and dedication.
Take Time to Reflect On Your Journey
As we honor this International Day of Yoga together, I invite you—whether you’re a lifelong practitioner, a new student, or a fellow teacher—to pause and reflect on your own unique journey. Take a moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the subtle (or profound) ways yoga has touched your life. Remember, every breath, every posture, every insight is part of your personal evolution. Let yourself celebrate the growth, the lessons, and even the stumbles along the way.
Your story matters, and your presence enriches our shared community. Today, I encourage you to journal about your experience, share your reflections with a friend, or simply sit in gratitude for the practice and for yourself. What has yoga given you? How have you changed? And how might you continue to blossom, both on and off the mat? Dig deep as you reflect on this amazing journey.

Gratitude for the Lineage and the Community
On this International Day of Yoga, I bow deeply to the lineage of teachers and practitioners who have carried this practice across generations and continents. I am profoundly grateful for the wisdom, resilience, and love that has been passed down to us. Every time I step onto my mat, I feel connected to a river of yogis—past, present, and future—flowing together in pursuit of peace, freedom, and truth.
To my students, fellow teachers, and every soul who has shared this journey with me: thank you. Thank you for showing up, for trusting me, for letting me witness your transformation. You are my inspiration, my motivation, and my greatest teachers.
