  • Ask Jill Q & A

Q: How do I cue breath without triggering anxiety in a trauma-informed yoga class?

A: Breath cueing can feel supportive for some students and activating for others, especially if “take a deep breath” lands like pressure. Trauma-informed breath cueing prioritizes choice, neutral language, and options that keep students connected to the room.

Cue permission first—“If it feels good, notice your breath as it is.” Then offer two pathways: “You can keep breathing naturally, or lengthen your exhale by one count.” Avoid breath holds and intensity cues. Pair breath with a grounding sensation (feet on the mat, hand on belly) so students can anchor in the body, not performance.

  • Ask Jill (Daily Yoga Q&A For Support)

Q: How do I create inner safety during meditation?

A: Inner safety during meditation is the felt sense that you’re here, you’re supported, and you don’t have to force anything. It’s not about having a perfectly calm mind—it’s about meeting your experience with presence and compassion. Practical takeaway: choose one simple anchor (your breath at the nostrils, the weight of your hips, or your hands touching). Then practice a gentle phrase on each exhale: “I am here.” If you feel overwhelmed, open your eyes, look around the room, and return to the anchor for three steady breaths.

  • Ask Jill (Daily Yoga Q&A For Support)

Q: Is a 300-hour yoga teacher training worth it if I already have my 200-hour?

A: A 300-hour yoga teacher training is where many teachers move from “I can teach a class” to “I can hold a room with clarity, confidence, and heart.” It’s worth it when you’re ready to deepen your craft—sequencing with intention, refining cueing, expanding your understanding of anatomy and subtle body, and finding your voice without performing. Practical takeaway: ask yourself one question—Do I want more tools, or more trust? If you’re craving both, a 300-hour can be a grounded next step that supports your growth as a teacher and as a human.

  • Ask Jill (Daily Yoga Q&A For Support)

Q: Do you offer yoga teacher training office hours at different times?

A: Yes. If the current office hours time doesn’t work for your schedule, there are other options that can count toward your YTT 200 office hours requirement. In addition to the posted office hours, 12pm MST Tea Time sessions also count(they’re 1:1 support), and the monthly YTT 200-specific Saturday group sessions count too. Practical takeaway: if Fridays at 8am don’t fit your life (kids, work, time zones), you’re not stuck—send a few days/times that work for you and we’ll find an option that supports your consistency and completion.

  • Ask Jill (Daily Yoga Q&A For Support)

    Q: How do I cue a trauma-informed yoga class?

A: Trauma-informed cueing is about offering choice, pacing, and respect—so students can stay connected to themselves without feeling pushed. It’s less about “perfect” words and more about creating an atmosphere of inner safety. Practical takeaway: use invitational language (“you might try…”, “if it feels supportive…”), offer options (bend the knees, take child’s pose, stay seated), and avoid hands-on assists unless you have clear consent. Keep transitions slow and predictable, and remind students they’re always in charge of their practice. When people feel choice, they can actually arrive.

  • Ask Jill (Daily Yoga Q&A For Support)

Q: What should I look for in an online yoga teacher training?

A: In an online yoga teacher training, look for three things: clear structure, real feedback, and a learning environment that helps you feel safe to grow. A strong program will teach you how to teach (cueing, sequencing, anatomy basics, and holding space), not just how to practice.

Practical application: before you enroll, ask if you’ll get live support (office hours, practice teaching, Q&A), how you’ll be evaluated, and what happens after graduation. If the answers feel grounded, transparent, and human—you’re in the right place.

  • Ask Jill (Daily Yoga Q&A For Support)

Q: What’s happening in the body when stretching makes you feel tighter, and what’s the safest way to practice as a beginner?

A: When stretching makes you feel tighter, it’s usually your body protecting you—not you “doing yoga wrong.”

    What’s happening:

    • Your nervous system senses threat when you push too deep too fast, so muscles guard and tighten.

    • Breath-holding (even subtly) tells the body “stress,” which increases bracing—often in hips, core, and low back.

    • If you stretch past your available range, your body grips to stay stable.

Safest way to practice as a beginner (my Jill rules):

    • Stay at 60–70% intensity—you should feel sensation and be able to breathe smoothly.

    • Prioritize breath + stability over depth (bend knees, use blocks, shorten stance).

    • Use this test: If you can’t relax your jaw/shoulders or breathe steadily, you’re too deep—back off.

Yoga isn’t about forcing flexibility. It’s about teaching your body it’s safe enough to release.

  • Ask Jill Q & A

Q: What is a grounding breath I can do when I feel overwhelmed?

A: A grounding breath is a simple breathing pattern that helps you return to the present moment by giving your attention something steady and kind to hold. When you feel overwhelmed, you don’t need to “fix” yourself—you just need a safe place to land.

Practical takeaway: try a long-exhale breath. Inhale gently through the nose for a count of 4, then exhale slowly for a count of 6–8. Repeat for 6 rounds. Keep your shoulders soft and feel your feet or seat heavy. Let the exhale be a quiet signal: “I’m safe enough to be here.”
